Skeletons in the Cupboard (A Tale of Two Sisters) Skeletons in the Cupboard (A Tale of Two Sisters)

4 x 30 minute comedy
BBC Radio 4, 2019

Maureen and Lesley are two sisters in their sixties. Lesley, the younger, a bit of an irresponsible wild child in her youth, moved back into their childhood home to nurse their aged mother through her last illness. Now the sisters are decluttering the place prior to putting it on the market. Maureen, the older sister, a high-achiever with nervy undertones, drives up the motorway every Thursday to give Lesley a hand. The sibling rivalry of sixty years is alive and flourishing. Long-forgotten objects surface, prompting long-buried resentments and poignant moments. And then suddenly a mystery man turns up on their doorstep. David says he’s interested in buying the house, but the sisters begin to suspect he has another, more secret agenda…

Gloomsbury IV Gloomsbury IV

6 x 30 minute comedy
BBC Radio 4, 2016

Miriam Margolyes, Alison Steadman, Morwenna Banks, Jonathan Coy, John Sessions and Nigel Planer are back for a new series of adulterous adventures in Gloomsbury, the riotous six-part comedy that parodies the infamous goings-on of the Bloomsbury group.

Written by Sue Limb, Gloomsbury is an affectionate send up of the group whose arty and amorous adventures scandalised the nation in the early 20th century. This fourth series continues to follow the fortunes of novelist and gardener Vera Sackcloth-Vest (Margolyes),husband Henry Mickleton (Coy) and their extremely close coterie of artists, novelists and public figures.

During this new series Lionel and Ginny Fox (Nigel Planer and Alison Steadman) are struggling with money worries as Maynard Keynes advised them to make some very dodgy investments on the Stock Market and they have lost a small fortune. Meanwhile at Sizzlinghurst, Henry has become concerned about what he sees as Vera’s dangerous susceptibility to romance, and her tendency to fascinate more than one woman at once. Luckily he has his biography of the King to distract him as well as the odd visit from the Prince of Wales, accompanied by Wallis Simpleton.

Gloomsbury III Gloomsbury III

6 x 30 minute comedy
BBC Radio 4, 2014

Miriam Margolyes, Alison Steadman, Morwenna Banks, Jonathan Coy, Nigel Planer and John Sessions return to breathe life into a host of familiar characters including Vera Sackcloth-Vest, Ginny Fox, DH Lollipop and Venus Traduces. And some new characters join the hedonistic happenings including socialites Lady Utterline Amoral and Mrs Wallis Simpelton, poet Gertrude Klein and a rather free and easy Prince of Wales.

Written by Sue Limb, the first two series of Gloomsbury were transmitted on Radio 4 to great critical and popular acclaim. An affectionate send up of the literary group whose private and professional pursuits dominated the cultural scene in the early 20th century, the series continues the adventures of Vera Sackcloth-Vest and her close-knit coterie of writers, poets and artists.

Gloomsbury Gloomsbury

6 x 30 minute comedy
BBC Radio 4, 2012

Gloomsbury is an affectionate parody of the Bloomsbury group, whose arty and adulterous adventures dominated the cultural scene in the early 20th century. The series follows the fortunes of Vera Sackcloth-Vest, writer, gardener and transvestite, and her compulsive urge to escape from the tranquillity of her rather cramped little castle in Kent which she shares with her doting but ambiguous husband Henry who is something in the Foreign Office. Vera’s heart is forever surging with exotic passion for Ginny Fox, a neurasthenic novelist who adores her, or Venus Traduces, a naughty demi-mondaine. The Sapphic elopements of these privileged women reveal their inability to undertake the most basic domestic tasks: how to boil a kettle, for example, in a damp cottage in Zennor, is a challenge which stumps Vera and Ginny for hours. The misunderstandings, jealousies and rows of this coterie form the basis of the series. Glimpses of the group’s literary endeavours alternate with devoted letters which whiz between Vera and Henry, for whether he is in the Balkans or simply in the distant drawing room, a separation of a mere fifty yards is sometimes just too much to bear.

The Revenge Files of Alistair Fury The Revenge Files of Alistair Fury

13 x 30 minute comedy
CBBC, BBC1, BBC2, 2008-12

Based on the six books by Jamie Rix published by Random House in 2004/2005, The Revenge Files of Alistair Fury is a series of funny stories centred around the wild and immoderate revenge missions of an embittered boy, as he takes on his family, friends and everyone else in the world. He is the littlest in a family of five, last in line for everything good and first in line for everything bad. It’s about brothers and sisters getting more pocket money than you, about having the smallest bedroom in the house, about always getting the littlest portion at supper, about never watching a telly programme of your choice, about being ignored, about being the youngest – it’s about getting revenge for all that and more…
